2022 BMW iX Debuts as Electric SUV with 391 Mile Range, $84,195 Price
The 2022 BMW iX debuts as BMW Group’s new technology flagship that combines emission-free driving pleasure, sporting agility, and sustainability. With its trailblazing design and luxurious interior, it embodies a fresh new take on the Sports Activity Vehicle. It will be launched with a choice of two model variants: the iX xDrive40 and iX xDrive50. In addition, an iX M60 will launch down the line as well.
Specs
Both 2022 BMW iX models are equipped with two electric motors and an electric all-wheel-drive system. However, the xDrive50 produces 523 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque. That allows it to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds. It also has a range of 391 miles and an electric power consumption of 23.0 – 19.8 kWh/ 62 miles.
In comparison, the xDrive40 produces 326 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. It has a 0-62 mph time of 6.1 seconds as well. It has a range of 264 miles and an electric power consumption of 22.5 – 19.4 kWh/ 62 miles.
Furthermore, an even faster iX M60 will arrive at a later date. It will pack 600 horsepower and an exceptionally sporty all-electric driving experience.
Driving Characteristics
The body structure, design principle and chassis tuning of the 2022 BMW iX are perfectly geared to blending superb ride comfort with sporty handling characteristics. For instance, the aluminum spaceframe construction and the Carbon Cage’s uses carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the roof and at the sides and rear. As a result, it increases rigidity and at the same time minimizes weight.
In addition, the high-voltage battery is located low down in the car’s underbody which lowers the centre of gravity. In combination with the even weight distribution, handling becomes more nimble. Thanks to its well-balanced driving characteristics, the BMW iX feels solid and comfortable out on the road.
Suspension
The standard chassis technology for the 2022 BMW iX features a double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle. It also has lift-related dampers and an electric steering system with Servotronic function and a variable ratio. Two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers, Integral Active Steering and Sport brakes are all available as an option as well.
Furthermore, as an alternative to the standard 20-inch light-alloy wheels, there is a choice of 21-inch and 22-inch Air Performance Wheels. These can also be fitted with noise-reduced tires. They have a layer of foam on their inner surface to improve acoustic comfort.
All-Wheel Drive
The electric all-wheel-drive system in the 2022 BMW iX transmits exactly the right amount of drive torque to the front and rear wheels in all driving situations. For instance, its intelligent control enables fully variable power transmission ranging from pure rear-wheel drive to an all-wheel-drive set-up that maximizes traction.
Also, the near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology fitted in tandem with all-wheel drive for the first time brings about a further improvement in traction and handling stability. Integrated into the motor management, this system produces very precise and lightning fast corrective input. Therefore, it enables the car to make effortless progress at all times, even in adverse weather and road conditions.
5th Gen eDrive
The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is fitted in the 2022 BMW iX. It is centered around a drive unit which brings together the electric motor, power electronics and transmission within a single housing. As a result, this highly integrated electric drive system configuration has a beneficial effect on both power density and efficiency.
Both motors in the BMW iX work according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor. For instance, the excitation of the rotor is induced by the feed-in of electrical energy rather than fixed permanent magnets. This enables them to put their maximum torque on tap immediately on pulling away and maintain it over an extremely broad rev band.
Battery/ Charging
The 2022 BMW iX includes a high-voltage battery with state-of-the-art battery cell technology. For example, its volumetric energy density is up by around 40 percent in comparison to the high-voltage battery in the 2020 BMW i3.
In addition, the Combined Charging Unit (CCU) in the BMW iX has been designed to offer a very high level of charging flexibility. As a result, DC power can charge at a rate of up to 200 kW (BMW iX xDrive50) or 150 kW (BMW iX xDrive40). This allows the battery’s state of charge to increase from 10 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes in the BMW iX xDrive50 or 31 minutes in the case of the BMW iX xDrive40. Furthermore, range can be increased by up to 93 miles for the BMW iX xDrive50 and over 59 miles for the BMW iX xDrive40 in just ten minutes when they are plugged into a DC fast-charging station with an initial battery charge of 10 percent.
Interior
The 2022 BMW iX interior provides quality of life and personal well-being. For instance, it has vast amounts of room and newly developed seats with integral head restraints. The absence of a center tunnel creates extra legroom as well. It also has an automatic climate control system that comes with a nano-fiber filter. It purifies the air and new touchscreen controls. Lastly, it features a specially composed drive sound, which adds to the thrill of the driving experience.
iDrive
The new generation of the iDrive display and operating system is making its debut in the 2022 BMW iX. It is based on the new BMW Operating System 8 and was designed with a clear focus on the touchscreen operation of the BMW Curved Display and on verbal communication with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.
The BMW Curved Display is a fully digital display grouping formed by a 12.3-inch information display and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches. They are housed together behind a glass surface that is angled towards the driver as well.
Price and Release Date
The 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 price starts at $84,195. However, there is no word on the iX xDrive40 price at the moment. Both models have a release date of early 2022.
