2022 BMW i4 Debuts as Electric Gran Coupe with 367 Mile Range
The 2022 BMW i4 debuts as their first electric vehicle focused on driving dynamics with an elegant design and practicality of a four-door Gran Coupe. Market launch gets underway in November 2021 with two model variants: the i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50.
Specs
The 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40 produces 340 horsepower from a single electric motor and comes with rear-wheel drive. In addition, it has a range of 367 miles and an electric power consumption of 20-16 kWh/ 62 miles. It can also achieve a maximum torque output of 317 lb-ft that allows it to accelerate to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds.
However, the i4 M50 produces 544 horsepower from two electric motors and features all-wheel drive. Also, it has a range of up to 317 miles and an electric power consumption of 24–19 kWh/ 62 miles. It comes with Sport Boost for ultra-dynamic power delivery. That allows it to increase maximum torque output to 586 lb-ft. As a result, it can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds.
The BMW i4 is based on a flexible vehicle architecture conceived from the outset for a purely electric drive system. For instance, it has a long wheelbase and wide tracks. It has a weight-minimized yet extremely stiff body structure as well. Furthermore, model-specific torsion struts, aluminum shear panel and the front axle subframe have a fixed connection with the casing of the high-voltage battery.
Battery/ Charging
The 2022 BMW i4 has a slim high-voltage battery specially designed for the new model. It is also positioned low down in the vehicle floor with an extremely low cell height of 110 millimeters. As a result, the center of gravity is 53 millimeters lower than in the BMW 3 Series Sedan.
Adaptive or individually adjustable recuperation of braking energy increases efficiency as well. It enables one-pedal feeling plus the use of the coasting function depending on need and the traffic situation.
Furthermore, a Combined Charging Unit allows use of DC fast-charging stations with output of up to 200 kW. As a result, range can be increased by as much as 102 miles in the i4 iDrive40 in 10 minutes. In comparison, the i4 M50 can charge up to 87 miles in 10 minutes.
5th Gen eDrive
The 2022 BMW i4 features the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. For instance, it has a highly integrated unit of electric motor, power electronics and transmission plus the latest battery cell technology. Electric motors also work according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous unit. As a result, it has a power density of up to 2.14 kW/kg with instantaneous power delivery, sustained over a broad rev band.
Suspension
The 2022 BMW i4 uses a double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle. In addition, lift-related dampers and rear-axle air suspension come as standard. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation delivers outstanding traction and directional stability in extremely dynamic driving maneuvers.
The BMW i4 M50 also features model-specific adaptive M suspension, variable sport steering, M Sport braking system and optional M light-alloy wheels (up to 20-inch).
Exterior
The 2022 BMW i4 is a Gran Coupe that combines sedan-level ride comfort with modern functionality. It features an elegantly sporting design with stretched coupe proportions, a flowing roofline, four doors with frameless windows and a large tailgate.
Furthermore, the front end features the new striking BMW kidney grille with discreetly integrated camera, ultrasonic and radar sensors. It has slim headlights with BMW Laserlight available as an option as well. Lastly, the BMW i4 eDrive40 in M Sport specification and BMW i4 M50 come with bespoke performance-led cues. M Carbon exterior package and M Performance Parts are also available from launch.
Interior
The BMW i4 has a luxurious premium ambience and variable-use interior space. It features sport seats and sports steering wheel as standard. Driving pleasure and comfort are enhanced by options such as seat heating and ventilation, Vernasca leather trim and BMW Individual leather trim variants, instrument panel in Sensatec and leather variants, M Sport package Pro, ambient lighting, Harman Kardon Surround Sound System and large glass slide/tilt sunroof.
iDrive
The 2022 BMW i4 premieres the new generation BMW iDrive control/operation system. For instance, it has a clear focus on the touchscreen functionality of the new BMW Curved Display and natural spoken dialogue using the extensively upgraded BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Furthermore, the fully digital screen grouping of the 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display create the Curved Display. The system has advanced graphics and powerful software based on BMW Operating System 8. Lastly, Remote Software Upgrades keep the software up to date.
Price and Release Date
The 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40 price starts at $56,395 and the i4 M50 price starts at $66,895. However, BMW still has EV tax credits available that can cut $7,500 from those prices. Both models have a release date of early 2022.
