2021 Ford F-150 Raptor Debuts with EcoBoost Power, 37-inch Tires
The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor arrives as the third generation high-speed off-road performance truck. “Raptor is the original desert truck. We just took it to another level,” said Ali Jammoul, Ford Performance vehicle program director. Let’s go over its price, specs, release date, and everything you need to know.
Suspension
The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor features a completely new suspension. For example, it has a new five-link rear suspension developed specifically for the Raptor. It’s designed to deliver more control and power to the ground with greater confidence over rough terrains. In addition, it has extra-long trailing arms to better maintain position in rough terrain. It also has 24-inch coil springs which are the longest in the class. In combination with a sophisticated software management system, the truck can put more torque to the rear wheels than before. Lastly, it has next-generation FOX™ Live Valve™ internal bypass shocks and larger 3.1-inch diameter anodized aluminum shock bodies.
Tires
For the first time, the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor is available with either 35-inch or 37-inch tires. As a result, these are the largest factory-fitted tires on a production light-duty full-size pickup. They are specially designed BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires that offer maximum traction and handling. With 35-inch tires the Raptor clears 12-inch obstacles with an approach angle of 31 degrees. However, when fitted with 37-inch tires it has 13.1-inches of clearance at a 33.1 degree approach angle. Dessert runners and rock crawlers will appreciate the larger wheel sizes.
EcoBoost
The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor comes with a third-generation twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost® high-output engine. It delivers torque low in the rev range where it counts. In addition, it has state-of-the-art turbos and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. It also has high-power fans built into the cooling system. Total output is not available at the moment but it has an EPA-estimated range of more than 500 miles on a full tank. Furthermore, it has a Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission, electric locking differential, and TORSEN® front limited-slip differential.
Tech
The cockpit of the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor has a high-tech interior built for comfort and style. For Instance, it has a customizable 12-inch digital gauge cluster for no additional price. It shows Raptor-specific graphics and animations, off-road data, and turn-by-turn navigation. Over-the-air updates also offer the potential for an even smarter Raptor with more capabilities in the future. In addition, the Terrain Management System has seven drive modes that include Slippery, Tow/ Haul, Sport, Normal, Off-Road, Baja, and Rock Crawl. Lastly, it has Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, and an 18-Speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Trail 1- Pedal Drive
The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor comes with Trail 1-Pedal Drive which helps make extreme off-road driving easier. For example, in harsh trail situations, a driver must typically use both pedals. However, this system combines that into one pedal. Press the throttle to move forward, release the throttle to brake. In addition, it also comes standard with Trail Control which operates as a cruise control for off-road use. Drivers just select a set speed and the truck manages throttle and braking. This allows the driver to focus on steering through challenging off-road conditions.
