2021 BMW Alpina D3 S Revealed – All the Details
The 2021 BMW Alpina D3 S arrives in both sedan and wagon body styles. It’s based off the BMW M340d turbo-diesel. Here’s what you need to know.
Performance
The 2021 Alpina D3 S features a mild increase in performance over stock. For instance, thanks to their high performance cooling system Alpina was able to increase engine output to 355 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. That’s an increase of 15 horsepower and 22 lb-ft of torque over a stock M340d.
Power goes through an 8-speed transmission to all four wheels. The transmission software allows for faster shift times and the all-wheel drive system is more rear biased thanks to some modifications.
The 2021 Alpina D3 S Sedan accelerates from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds and 4.8 seconds in the Wagon. Also, the Sedan can hit 124 mph in 17.5 seconds and the Wagon can do it 18.3 seconds. Lastly, the Sedan has a top speed of 170 mph and the Wagon has a top speed of 168 mph.
Mild-Hybrid
For the first time ever in an Alpina model the 2021 Alpina D3 S adds BMW’s mild-hybrid technology that features a 48v starter generator. Recuperated energy is stored in a 48V battery and is supplied by the 48V starter generator. Also, with up to 11 electrical horsepower readily available, engine and throttle response improves at low speeds. In addition, Alpina states the D3 S will surprise with its willingness to rev up to redline which is uncharacteristic of a diesel engine.
Release Date and Pricing
If you live in Europe the 2021 BMW Alpina D3 S is already available for purchase. Unfortunately BMW no longer sells diesels in the States so Alpina won’t be offering it in America. The D3 S Sedan starts at €70,500 and the Wagon starts at €71,900.
